Adams Defends Youngsters’ Trip to CARIFESTA

photo -Ingrid MoesanAntigua St. John's - An 90-member contingent will be representing Antigua & Barbuda at the 2013 Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) this year in Suriname.

Culture Minister Eleston Adams said the delegation is expected to represent all aspects of Antiguan culture, inclusive of drama, dance, music, culinary arts and literature.

According to Adams, CARIFESTA allows the region’s foremost performers to come together in a single space. He added that while he has been a proponent for younger performers to attend, he also sees the need for more experienced performers to accompany them.

The younger performers need exposure and experience, the minister noted, so despite the criticism, he will continue to push for them to participate, while recognising that more experienced artists also have their part to play.

Minister Adams noted that the set of young performers who headed to Trinidad & Tobago for the last CARIFESTA performed exceedingly well, and then-secretary general of CARICOM Edward Carrington commended them at the close of the festival, and also wrote to Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer praising the Antiguan & Barbudan contingent.

The Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) first took place in post-independent Guyana in 1972, but was actually introduced in 1952 in Puerto Rico. In 1952, Trinidad & Tobago, along with Jamaica, participated in the festival as the representative islands for the then British West Indies.

One of CARIFESTA’s main missions is to “deepen its commitment” to the people of the region and to “re-affirm its understanding of the value and power of our collective cultures.

Ultimately, CARIFESTA is a festival that allows Caribbean people to celebrate ourselves.” This year’s events are slated for August 16-25.

This is a correction from Minister Adams:
Dear Caribarena,
You have an error in this article.
Its not a 18 member delegation.
Its going to be a 90 member delegation.
Please note and make the necessary change.
Respectfully,

Namba
