UPP to Open School Meals Centre at Bendals School

Dr Jacqui Quinn-LenadroAntigua St. John's - The United Progressive Party (UPP) government is getting set to open its 24th School Meals Centre.

Dr Jacqui Quinn-Lenadro, the UPP candidate for St George and education minister said the Bendals Primary School is the newest educational institution to become a part of the National School Meals Programme.

Dr Quinn-Leandro said an opening ceremony would be held this Friday.

"I want to let you know… those people who are now in St Mary's North, you're going to be very happy that on Friday, May 2, we are going to be opening the National School Meals Programme in Bendals School," she said.

She continued, "That programme (School Meals) that was started by sister Joanne Massiah will be spreading to the community of Bendals and the children and parents of Bendals will now be able to enjoy a hot, nutritious meal."

The opening of this facility, according to Dr Quinn-Leandro, would provide employment for a number of individuals.

She said once the UPP is re-elected for a third term, the School Meals Programme would be opened in all primary schools across Antigua & Barbuda.

"And again, what we are saying, there will be people who are working in the centre providing employment. Fisherfolk, farmers, retailers, wholesalers will benefit from the expansion of the School Meals Programme," the UPP candidate said.

Dr Quinn-Leandro said the opening may cause worries to the opposition Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (UPP), which seems to get upset when the UPP makes some inroads for the benefit of the people.

There are 23 schools and three preschools across Antigua & Barbuda that form part of the initiative.

The National School Meals Programme is the brainchild of Senator Joanne Massiah and one of the UPP's flagship programmes.

Is it any wonder they filing injunction after injunction after injunction, forty something a them to stall the legal process. The fact remains that UPP Government has provided children of 26 schools with hot nutritious lunches; something ALP never do. Some a de children no happy when vacation time come, cause dem miss de lunch. I am speaking from experience because is what me hear them say. The ABLP talking bout time to rebuild; yes, time to rebuild dem bank account.

Yeah--Sorry 'bout that, OUTOFANTIGUA! We didn't know it was going to be this painful for you to accept the fact that the ABLP/ALP government never open any School Meals Center across Antigua and Barbuda in all its twenty-eight (28) years in office but the UPP government opened twenty-four (24) of them in less than ten years in office. We just wanted you and anybody else who says the UPP has done nothing to know that even if you keep refusing to accept the truth, it still exist. And now that the economic is better, we're going to be able to do much more.

In 10 years your pet project; the Mighty School Lunch has only covered (25) schools. that is an average of 2.5 schools per year. now you wants five more yrs just to add a dozen more schools and as you and the UPP government track records goes, this will be an unfinished project leaving more children wondering in your school lunch wilderness. If by some miracle you get five more years, do the Math lady..

If we actually had a government that could create jobs and build a stable economy we wouldn't need all these handouts. Seems all you people good for is social programs. Help people help themselves not give handouts at the tax payers expense.
