Decline in Gate Receipts For 2012

Decline in Gate Receipts For 2012Antigua St. John’s - The Carnival Development Committee (CDC) recorded an overall decline in paid patrons attending the 2012 Carnival activities…although some shows recorded increases in attendance.

Head of the CDC’s Finance Committee and Business Development Manager at the National Festivals Office, Richard Apparicio, said there was an overall 4.8 per cent decline in paid patrons compared with last year.

He said the figures for 2011 show that 20,115 people paid to attend carnival events, compared with 19,144 for 2012. The gate receipts totaled $482,775 for 2012. In 2011, that figure amounted to $527,000 (Please note these figures are unaudited).

The government subsidises the festival to the tune of $2.5 million each year.

Apparicio said most carnival events recorded declines with the pageants - the Queen of Carnival Show and the Teen Splash recording the biggest decline of 26.8 percent overall. Overall attendance for these shows was 4,082 for 2011 compared with 3,135 for 2012. A closer look at the figures shows that for the Queen of Carnival Show 1,117 people paid to enter in 2011. This declined to 894 for 2012. For the Teen Splash, last year, 3,165 people bought tickets compared with 2,241 this year.

The Wadadli Calypso Monarch also recorded a decline. According to Apparicio, for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the finals there was a decline of 6.3 per cent. The figures are 1,929 paid last year with a fall-off to 1,808 this year.

But the committee would be pleased to note that the LIME Party Monarch increased its attendance by 19.1 per cent. In 2011, 6,047 paid patrons attended compared with 7,200 this year>

Apparicio noted that there was also good news for pan enthusiasts as attendance at the Panorama was up this year when compared with last year. The overall attendance was up by 8 per cent with 981 paid patrons in 2011 jumping to 1,062 in 2012.

The CDC Finance official said the biggest increase in attendance was recorded for Carnival Monday and Tuesday with attendance over both days increasing from 1,939 in 2011 to 2,948 this year, an increase of 52 per cent.

Apparicio noted that the Queen of Carnival Pageant may have been affected by the threat of inclement weather this year. He also believes that rain affected the gate receipts for Carnival Monday and Tuesday for last year.

He said the CDC as well as the ministry responsible for culture must look closely at the figures and determine the way forward for Carnival.

“We must ask the questions, do we need to have four parades during our Carnival and are we getting value for money?” he queried.

He said a closer look is also necessary for the number and relevance of the pageants in carnival.

“Our pageants have turned the men in society to mere taxi-drivers where they drop off their women folk at Carnival City and find something to do elsewhere for the duration of the show. We have to find out why men are not attending the shows and find a way to bring them back,” he noted.

The carnival official expressed much concern at the popularity of the pre-carnival fetes and the negative impact they may be having on carnival gate receipts.

“We have seen an explosion of the pre-carnival fetes and they have been very successful. However, when the official carnival programme starts, we see a decline in gate receipts. Is this a case where available income is spent on these fetes and then there’s nothing left for the festival? After all, carnival is coming at the end of the food-chain,” he explained.

Apparicio said it is clear that there is need for a holistic rethink of Carnival to make it more relevant and to provide value for money.

Cater for the youths

#21 It Is Me » 2012-08-25 12:23

The CDC gotta get real. If you see people are packing in the venues for these fete's but nobody is coming to ya'll shows then it is obvious the CDC is not giving the people what they want. Instead of catering for the real party goers during carnival they decided to put a tribute show for Short Shirt. I have nothing against Short Shirt but that show could of and should of been done at another time. I bet you if that was a tribute show to Burning Flames the same night it would of SELL OFF!!!

My point is ... give the people what they want!!! It is the young people that are gonna be attending most of these shows and the boring queen shows aren't cutting it anymore!!!

Maybe the CDC have to get younger as well!!!

No surprise here. Whatever the cause for the decline, we need to stop fooling ourselves and claiming this festival as a celebration of "freedom"

Carnival has become boring no real talent, I would suggest that eliminations are held for all the competitions and only those who pass through go on to the finals. Take a leaf out fo the TV shows lets start up Antigua has got Talent, good luck

Carnival needs to be revamp

#14 thinkoutsidethebox » 2012-08-22 18:59

Antigua carnival needs to put the pageants in June and put more fetes during the week of carnival. Take surveys listen to the patrons who attend carnival from abroad. When we come to Antigua we want to party all the good fetes take place before we get there. We are not going to pageants we do not know the individuals. Have the pageant contestants in the parade however, these pageants need to be put in smaller venues. Keep soca monarch competition and take over the fetes that is how you are going to make money.

numbers

#13 hya » 2012-08-22 17:36

I don't see anything wrong with what Mr. Apparicio said. Basically, all he did was give the numbers of for the attendees of the shows. He never blamed anyone, but asked that the CDC and the ministry look at the numbers and that by the way is the correct thing to do. Actually, the show with the most vulgarity had the greatest attendance. This man has been living in Antigua for nearly 50 years. If someone has a gripe with the goverment or CDC then deal with the goverment and ministry, not get personal because of attendance numbers or because you just dont like him for whatever reason. Take that to a different setting.

#12 rupert j. » 2012-08-22 15:56

Why are you guys attacking the finance person, his job is to give you the numbers as they present themselves, should he have fudged the numbers to make it look it better than it really is and then you the said folks would be calling for his execution, come on guys a lot of us know where the problem is and it has to do with how the festival is being run, first and foremost there are to many cheifs and not enough bottle washers, too many complimentary tickets giving away, not enough planning and the product is not being taken seriously those are some of the problem with carnaval and I am sure there are a lot more.

Carnival and Culture are jokes

#10 Dr. Dredd » 2012-08-22 12:46

Talk. Talk. Talk. Until music, drama, elocution and the performing arts in general are taught in schools, nothing will change. Carnival should be a show case of our best. But what will your best be if no attention is being paid to developing and teaching the elements which will be displayed? Our teens and queens come and sing off key; play an instrument like a robot having memorised the tune for the competition or lumber around the stage, calling it a dance. At least these days we don't seem to have the Vaughn Walter produced dramatic presentations as talent. This used to be come and shout dialect as badly and as vulgarly as possible as a talent. And don't let us get into the calypsonians, none of whom, could get a song played any where other than here. Most can't sing. Their lyrics are local and insular. And the musical arrangement is old, stale and familiar. No creativity. And we wonder why people have stopped coming while we bury our heads in the sand.

Carnival Patron

#7 Shalorn » 2012-08-22 09:48

Whether the good gentleman is a civil servant or not and prepared financial budgets on letter / legal size or toilet paper, comes from Trinidad or Mars, the contents of the interview are hard facts.

The Prime Minister, Ministers of Tourism and Culture needs to sit down with their technical staff and examine the product that is being showcased and sold to the entertainment consumer.

This process involves TIME and WORK which are very painful for most people in Antigua & Barbuda.

#6 Carnival Police » 2012-08-22 09:29

Some of us stay home because we really can't take the vulgarity, the utter stupidity we see on stage, e.g, Sonic's presentation in the party monarch competition, total porn. Also the nastiness that goes on the stage Carnival Tuesday with our women jumping each other like dogs in heat. And you wonder why the receipts are down?

#5 festival off staffer » 2012-08-22 09:28

dumb idea Dave!... Ttwo things: 1) why would u have a PRE-carnival fete after carnival. Plus they do have post-carnival fetes alla Blackout, We Come to Fete, Geek Fest etc. 2) there isn't a thing Apparicio, the minister or CDC can do to limit the amount of pre-carnival fetes.

I agree WHOLE-HEARTEDY with fireworks. Apparicio is good at saying whats wrong to point blame at others, so that the accountability and blame that should be geared at him and people wont realise that he is one of the biggest problems wrong with CDC for all the 'nothing' years he been there.

Square pegs in round holes

#4 Inquiring Mind » 2012-08-22 09:21

Is this a case where available income is spent on these fetes and then there’s nothing left for the festival? After all, carnival is coming at the end of the food-chain,” he explained." With the above being said, it is quite obvious that the CDC and the Festival Office are not doing things right. The present crop of administrators are the biggest square pegs in round holes. The Mighty Swallow was sent home at 60 when he was assisting the schools with the mentoring and training of the young calyspsonians because he is a known ALP supporter, yet there is one who brings nothing to the table but stress to the other workers at the Festival Office who has reached 60 but was kept on because she is a known UPP supporter. It is time for us to take politics out of our Carnival and aim to make it the "Caribbean's Most colourful summer festival once again". Until then we will continue to see a decline in our festival.

Mr. Critic at it AGAIN

#1 Firewroks » 2012-08-22 06:18

This CDC Business Development Manager R> Apparicio is the biggest square peg in a round hole within CDC, yet, though he adds NO value whatsoever.... he keep getting re-appointed to CDC just because he is a civil servant.

All he seem to do is criticize & criticize & criticize some more every year. When in fact, it is his job to fix most of the stuff he wines & cries about year in year out. Every joe-blow know the reason gate receipts down this year is because the CDC, Government et al gave away more complimentary tickets. We don't need an over paid Trinidadian to tell us that every August. Thi**erview was a waste og Caribarena's time.
Just once, i would like to hear Apparicio say something positive bout Carnival or at minimum - come up with an idea that makes sense, instead of pretending like he on the outside of CDC, so its right for him to be lead critic of CDC!!
