Rattigan Gets His Golden Cup

RattiganAntigua St. John's - Judging from the thousands that attended Bacchanal Saturday the LIME party monarch competition is as popular as ever.

The fans at carnival city were treated to the best in Groovy and Jumpy soca that Antigua has to offer as ten artists in both segments competed for the crown.

However at the end of the evening Tian Winter was adjudged the winner in the Groovy Monarch competition with “Roaming” and winner of the Jumpy Monarch competition was Rattigan with "Golden Cup". For more photos click

Blade opened the contest in the Groovy Monarch competition with his track “Teach me”. The melodious singer flanked by colorfully clad dancers held a wining lesson on stage which included a couple who was seriously challenged in that area.

With a dramatic video entrance which depicted her as a patient at an asylum “Tizzy” who made a surprise return this year to the competition had the crowd on their feet waving and jumping as she sang a fantastic rendition of her Groovy song “Get On”. The El A Kru frontline singer held her own during the segment and with her usual sweet melody gave a memorable and powerful performance.Tian Winter

Making her way through the audience accompanied by an iron band “TKO” band member Laurena took to the stage belting out in her powerful voice her hit song for 2013 “Mad”. She had a large entourage on the stage during her performance to include revelers and professional dancers.

Taking command of the stage was Claudette “CP” Peters with “My Flag”. CP entered the stage following a montage of regional artists and known personalities representing their various flags. She started her performance with a snippet of the national anthem and a march past where standing at attention, she took the eyes right from a small contingent of Pathfinders. CP successfully got the ARG to wave, cheer and sing along to her song.

Towards the end of her performance she also featured a huge prop of indigenous Caribbean airline LIAT which made its way through the audience on the field amidst applause and cheers.

Next on stage was “Set On” singing his 2013 hit “Smile a lot”. Set on took to the stage dressed as Batman’s Joker accompanied by clowns who through their antics got the crowd to “smile”. He also had the audience fist pumping and waving to the easy going song.

Lyrical Reds was next to perform, his feel good song “Island Girl”. The singer was accompanied by dancers clad in island beachwear and had island life props which added to his performance.

Ricardo Drue also did a small video presentation which depicted him escaping from an asylum before performing his song “Socaholic”. Dressed in a straight jacket he was accompanied on stage by a huge contingent which included dancers dressed in colorful mas costumes and a steel band.  He also poked fun at Tian Winter and Claudette Peters telling them that he will be fighting hard for the crown this year.

Hard KnaxxNext on stage was the highly energetic Hard Knaxx singing “Party Hard’. He did not have props but had professional dancers.

Hard Knaxx was as usual just accompanied by his fellow Madtiguans crew who through their contagious dance moves, bubbly personalities and catchy lyrics had the audience rocking and singing along to the groovy song.

Next up was Tian Winter who entered the stage to perform his song “Roaming” after a short video featuring soca loving British couple Iain Vale and Sian Jackson of “Don’t let me wine like a white man”. In the video the couple has kidnapped and tied up Tian in a bid to take his place on stage, the night of the competition.

The performance started with Iain singing on stage in Tians place before Tian manages to escape and chase him off. Tian then delivered a melodic performance that featured flag wavers, Icandy, and the UK couple.

Clad in all black Janine accompanied by back up dancers vigorously performed her song “No Way”. Her performance was good, unfortunately she had to follow Tian Winter and the crowd seemed to have been winded from his performance and did not react as enthusiastic to her piece.

The Jumpy Monarch competition started with K –Lee singing Bounce. He was accompanied by male and female dancers dressed as cheerleaders. Dressed as an old man Set On’s performance of “Old People Say” featured dancers and persons dressed as elderly men and women who still know how to dance and have fun at carnival time despite their age.Tizzy

Zacari gave an energetic performance of his song “Strut Back”. The veteran calypsonian gave an energetic performance and dancing lesson on how to “strut back”

Ezzy Rattigan was next and before he even entered the stage the audience was screaming for his hit song “For Cup”. Accompanied by a giant Golden Cup Rattigan had the entire ARG on its feet, jumping and screaming. His presentation also included dancers holding giant golden cups, forks and spoons.

Also making a surprise appearance was his father David “Krokuss” Edwards of Burning Flames.  Much to the audience delight Krokuss popped out of the Giant Golden Cup and joined his son in dance on stage.

Unfortunately Ricardo Drue had the unenviable task of performing right after Rattigan and did not get much crowd reaction for his song “Hypa Dan Dem”.

Next was Tizzy who gave an energetic performance of “Don’t try Stop We”. Wearing a black and white face makeup, The soca diva accompanied by her energetic backup dancers gave a memorable performance, punctuated by confetti.

Using photo slides, King Sonic gave a notable performance of his song “No place like home”. His backup dancers portrayed characters from the Wizard of Oz.

Next on stage was Hard Knaxx singing Jam Jam. He was dressed in full military apparel and carried a baton which he used to instruct the audience and his dancers on how to mash up the place.

Laurena came next with a melodic performance of her hot song “Mas”. She gave a good performance but the audience enthusiasm was minimal.

Dressed as a superhero, last on the stage was Tian Winter with “Aint got time for that”.  Keeping in theme with the lyrics of his song he brought on stage “Young Destroyer” whom he reportedly had a rift with last year. The two held hands in solidarity on stage telling the audience that there is no animosity between them now.

For the first time this year three of the island’s deejays also had a chance to participate in the competition in a DJ spinoff featuring some of the hottest tunes from Antigua. Deejays Miks, Easy P and Capleton each had three minutes to spin a selection of groovy soca.  At the end of the competition DJ Capleton was adjudged the winner.

When you choose to become an artist in whatever field the fans is what matters. If you cannot please the crowd, that is the fans, you might as well sing in your bathroom. And furthermore, why you think sponsors put all the money up for you. Yes TW says he had a point to proof but at the same time he as a group of followers to please, and he failed to do so. His entire album is good. People would have bought his CD and think they come out in there numbers to support him. But then he let them down. It just a dam shame. But egos are very difficult to get rid of in this business. Sometime the song people like are not even the one you would prefer. But remember it's not about you. It's about the thousands of fans.

The guy made a choice to sing aint got time and I see the reason why he chose it, he had a point to make and he did make his point, also not even machel could beat rattigan last night......i also think that the artist has a right to his choice of song to perform as well I think we as fans need to put ourselves in their shoes and understand what they are going through and not be selfish

TW gave it all away

#1 Socca Lover » 2013-08-04 15:20

I for one am a TW fan. But a very disappointed one in him. He made the choice to sing these two songs that were not winners at all. He said he was trying to send a message. Well message received and verdict was also received. TW had his fans waiting for something spectacular. But we waited in vain. In my opinion he not even deserved to have won the groovy part. And this all when he has the best album he ever made. I hope this was a teachable moment for him. If not he will make this mistake all over again. Listen to your supporters it's about them, not about you TW.
