Edimelo Captures the Calypso Monarch Crown

Edimelo Captures the Calypso Monarch CrownAntigua St. John's - The 2013 Wadadli Calypso Monarch Finals got off the ground in Round One with ten (10) contenders intent on unseating the reigning Monarch “King Bear” for their chance at the crown.

In months leading up to the Finals, many of the calypsonians got their exposure on local radio stations and others in the various tents around the island... affording the public an opportunity to become familiar with their songs and perhaps choose their favorites. For more photos click here

A large and appreciative audience was packed along the seats in the three (3) major stands in the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) as well as on the surrounding grounds and front of stage area.

The performances in the first round consisted of political and social commentary. The calypsonians made good use of props and supporting cast on stage in their effort to help portray the message within their songs

The tempo kicked up a notch in Round Two and the artistes used their livelier songs in this segment. There was lots of humor and good-natured rivalry. The costumes were flamboyant and the props elaborate.

During the 2013 Wadadli Monarch Competition, patrons were treated to a Vintage Showdown featuring veteran calypsonians: King Short Shirt (Sir McLean Emmanuel), King Swallow (Sir Rupert Philo) and King Obstinate (Paul Richards).

The calypso icons put on a show which brought back a dose of nostalgia for what many term the “Golden Days” of calypso. The audience was taken on a musical journey down calypso memory lane with songs such as: “Eye to Eye” by Swallow and “Children Melee” by Obstinate and “Rise” by King Short Shirt.King Short Shirt

Judges Revenge

So the judges got a chance to punish Bear! Too obvious, judges. The world is watching.
By the way, is it natural to have the same judges judge the same artist year in year out? Weird.

I'll never forget the first time I heard Antiguan Carnival singing. I was in a cab heading to a restaurant, and all I could think was "those poor women, singing with such strength and confidence, yet there seems to be no monitors, because they wouldn't possibly be singing that out of tune if they could hear themselves."

Two or three years later I heard their "studio" recordings, and was amazed that that was the way they really sang!!!

Calypso Monarch

Of all the years to miss carnival! Congratulations to Monarch Edimelo. It is pleasing to see that after all the years of participation in the cultural arts of Antigua/Barbuda he could win this title. I haven't heard his songs, I don't know what the lyrical content are, but one thing I know for sure is that his vocal stylings are unmatched. Also big up to Patta man Black Mahdi. Nobody could pen a song like he can. Wish I was there!
