Concerns over Election Overshadowing Carnival

Election Overshadowing CarnivalAntigua St. John's - Concerns have been raised in certain quarters about whether general elections would overshadow this year's summer festival.

Carnival usually runs from late July to early August.

Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer is yet to announce an election date, and many people believe they would be held in June or July, when many pre-Carnival events are scheduled.

Members of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) have also expressed their concern that the summer festival would be affected.

Paul "Chet" Greene said that once the ABLP is elected to office, within days, plans for Carnival would be heightened.

A new Carnival Development Committee (CDC) has still not been appointed.

There has been no indication as to what is causing the delay, but there is some speculation that election "fever" might be the cause.

"I just hope that the election is called before any Carnival event is staged. I know one is set for the end of May. I don't want the election to overshadow the festival," a woman told Caribarena.

She said there would probably be clashes between events if elections are held after May.

The woman is hoping to let her hair down during Carnival as a stress reliever following the election tension.

"I have plans to attend most, if not, all of the fetes," she said. "I was hoping that the election thing would have been over by now. Well, no matter what the outcome I plan to relieve my stress come carnival."

The woman opined that the court cases and the late re-registration exercise are partly to blame for the election delay.

Go ahead and have the election during Carnival. Drunk or sober, another Antiguan will be elected, and the race to the bottom will continue.

Let us face it, Spencer is now a fully declared Dictator. I would say nothing more except that he must call the elections and Gaston, we need a solemn promise from you that you will make constitutional changes to secure free and fair elections. That you will fix this date of uncertainty in calling an election and that the Supervisor of Elections will have full and direct control of all aspects of our elections and make the interference of the ABEC Chairman redundant. Make this promise and keep this promise, early in your government. Thank You!

Baldwin's Spencer's Legacy is the fact that he drank Cooks Pond Water! What a foolish fellow! I guess that's why clean running water is not a priority to him? What a foolish fellow! :-x :-x :-x

The dear leader of the republic of A&B don't plan to call another elections so you all may as well live with it and start your protests and street brawls like cancel the carnival and every other beyond 2014. I Can't give back A&B to Bird, Asot and the red ants.
