Ministry of Education Condemns Teen Party

Strong disapprovalAntigua St. John’s - The Ministry of Education has expressed strong disapproval of a planned post-Teen Splash party to be held in St. John’s on July 31, 2012.

A press release from the ministry described the event, “Summer Wave” as an “undesirable activity for school-aged children.”

Promoted by Platinum One, the after party is to be held at El Taco Loco. The flyer advertising the event promises free tequila shots on entry and sexy event girls.

But what has created major unease among education officials is that tickets can be purchased from students who are attending public secondary schools and the Antigua State College.

The ministry has served notice to promoters and students to immediately desist from using the names of schools in the marketing of their events.

“Are we telling them (students) it is okay to drink alcohol? If we are campaigning against the use of drugs among the youth, then what are we saying to young people with an activity of this calibre?” one ministry official queried.

Despite the promotion flyer stating that children under the age of 15 will not be admitted, the ministry of education says it is not in the least impressed.

I dont think El Taco Loco is to be blamed. I mean of course they should have declined the party, especially knowing what was going to take place. But will I stop going to El Taco Loco to have dinner with my boyfriend? No! Mistakes are made all of the time, we learn from them. I'm sure the owner is probably regretting the decision he made and will probably never even want to go to another party again. If we are to point fingers, point it at the youths, nd also to the parents who allow their kids out that late! :-|

I am ashamed of some of the sponsors who sponsor these events. Sometimes the schools ask some of these business and they report that NO MONEY. Then lo and behold they sponsor the nonsense that insult women by having these women pose scantily as **. As much as I can I boycott these sponsors until they put their money to good use. Say no to underage drinking!!!!!

This must be a misprint. El Taco Laco??? I thought that was a decent family owned business? When did it get into the business of "frat partying" and promoting binge-drinking and lasciviousness??? Again, there must be a misprint. I don't think El Taco Laco has anything to do with this at ll.

You mention that Antiguan and Barbudan youths need to follow the ways of American youths but that is what they have been doing and is why they are acting the way they are. Lack of Antiguan and Barbudan/African culture and values and chasing the American values is what has infultrated the minds of our youths and young parents. Youths need to stick to their values and culture which made them proud of who they were and work harder.

Excuse me, maybe Antiguan youth can take a note from American youths on how to behave, dance and the like. I've been to Antigua and was appalled at the way in which young kids behave (especially dance) there. And all the underage drinking!!!

The USA is a land of laws. In Antigua, anything goes!
