Swallow Honoured In Trinidad

Calypso icon, Sir Rupert King Swallow PhiloAntigua St. John's - Calypso icon, Sir Rupert King Swallow Philo has been presented with another major award in Trinidad for his outstanding contributions to calypso and soca over the past fifty years.

Swallow, who was recently in Trinidad for a series of performances, was presented with the National Action Cultural Committee’s award for being among the top 20 Calypso Stars of Gold at the ceremony held in Port of Spain at the end of December.

He said he was treated like royalty during the presentation ceremony and that he received a tremendous standing ovation when he was called on stage to receive the award. “It was a proud moment for me accepting the award and I did so not just for myself, but for the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” he stated.

Swallow told Caribarena that he has been asked to appear in the Lord Kitchener’s calypso Review throughout the upcoming carnival season in Trinidad.

“The Kitchener’s calypso Review is celebrating 50 years of operation this year and the organizers felt that as a fitting tribute I should appear there this year right up until the semi-finals,” he told Caribarena.

He said the organizers were especially keen for him to sing his first major hit, Man to Man – during his performances in Trinidad. He said the song has special meaning for him also as it was the first soca song he performed in Trinidad.

According to Swallow, after performing these many years in Trinidad, he is still a major crowd favorite with calypso lovers there.

Congrats! Congratulations!! Hip! Hip!! Horray!!!
You 'Mos def' deserve it...
Several years ago, after the screening of HAMA's second movie, I turned to a friend and said, "we need to establish a Hall of Fame for the Arts in Our Nation." He looked at me and said, " we don't have enough, artist to induct."
I totally disagree. We have a wonderful legacy in the Arts at home and abroad, that others have recognized, and We MUST too

They could not have considered someone more deserving of this award than King Swallow; he has always been committed to his work making good songs, and he put a lot of energy and effort into getting it to the people. Congratulation,King Swallow! I knew you were on your way to greatness when I first heard " Shake you bam bam " and " Carnival in Point."
