De Bear to Share 2012 LICC Crown

(L) King Konris and King De BearAntigua St. John’s – Reports have surfaced in the media to the effect that the Committee responsible for the Leeward Islands Calypso Competition has announced that a review of the competition results shows that St. Kitts & Nevis’ Konris ‘King Konris’ Maynard is the rightful winner, rather than Keithroy ‘De Bear’ Morson.

But because De Bear was initially announced as winner of the crown, King Konris will be asked to share the crown.

“I have nothing to say about that. That is not true and I have nothing to say about it,” De Bear told Caribarena in his very brief response, despite reports that both contestants were informed of the decision.

Reports credited to an official media statement from the Leeward Islands Calypso Competition (LICC) Committee note that the August 11th Competition resulted in an oversight that saw the crowning of De Bear . The initially announced result is now being declared unofficial.

The announcement was made on Thursday, but the results were said to have been examined some 10 days ago.

Attempts to reach Minister of Culture Eleston Namba Adams for a comment were unsuccessful, as were attempts to reach CDC Chairman Kayode O’Marde.

According to the release, "The Committee without reservation acknowledges that an oversight was made when instructions were given to the Auditor as to how to determine the winner."

De Bear benefited from a revised judging system at the local calypso competition and it seems a revision of the rules governing the regional competition seems to have worked against him.

The method that supposedly resulted in De Bear’s crowning was actually the method to be used in the event of a three-way tie, reports said, while the published rules suggested that the winning contestant would be determined as if any contestant is ranked first by a majority of the judges.

The score sheets reportedly put Konris in first place.

The Committee said it had discussed the overall situation and took into account all factors, and made the decision to declare King Konris and De Bear as joint winners of the 2012, LICC.

It said that both King Konris and King De bear had been informed of the decision.

No one should go to Anguilla for no calypso completion. They always teif there anyway.this system of judging is wrong where they have a Ranking system. Total BS. I have seen this in the past and it is not fair. You could have the highest score and the judges rank you last and you don't win. Total BS all calypsonians should boycott that show, nuff said

The above mistake indicates that our math problems are long standing. One would think that in the times of computers and such, we would have less of these mistakes. Strange thing is I don't recall such happening in the days before computers. Again, I will remind, garbage in, garbage out.
