Willikies Sons and Daughters Hold Reunion

Sons and Daughters of WillikiesOn Saturday January 14, Sons and Daughters of Willikies (S&DW), Inc New York held its first Winter Gala in support of its groundbreaking Village Reunion.

The Reunion is carded for August 3-9 in Willikies Village, Antigua. The gala was a spectacular formal event because it blended local memories with international experiences. This was wrapped in a ball of a splash. Holy Nativity Episcopal Church Hall, 3061 Bainbridge Ave, Bronx NY was the venue.

President Dr Oswald Thomas said he was deeply impressed with the overwhelming support from fellow villagers and well-wishers who turned out in great numbers to celebrate with over 250 Willikieans. From 8 pm until 2 am, the event sparkled with interactive activities. Joy, laughter, and local dialect filled the air. Some danced to different genres of local and globally familiar music; others feasted on delicacies and solid home food; while the rest were thrilled to get reacquainted with old friends, hang out in the open bar, and network with new friends.

Deputy Consul General of Antigua and Barbuda in New York, Omyma David, whose grandmother is from Willikies, applauded the group for its vision of community development at home and abroad.  Also in attendance was the  Rev Dr Belgrave Pelle, rector of St Mary’s Church and dean of New York. He delivered the prayers, blessings, and benediction.  The president inspired the group by showing the relationship between its mission and long-term strategic plans. He also highlighted recent achievements within the last nine months.

In response, villagers unanimously pledged to support the re-naming of Willikies School to Nelvie Henry-Gore School. One of the goals of the group is honour every son and daughter of Willikies who has made a significant contribution locally, regionally, and internationally.

Official greetings were gladly received and gracefully sent from MP Robin Yearwood and Senator Shawn Nicholas. Yearwood was the recipient of the Longest Serving Parliamentarian Award for representing the people of Willikies, St Philip’s North, and Antigua &  Barbuda. Having served unbroken for the past 37 years, Yearwood has made history as the longest serving member of Parliament in Antigua & Barbuda, the Caribbean, and the Commonwealth of Nations.

Men loafing by Spring tank or Toppa Hill has nothing to do with Robin. You will be a loafer if you have low self esteem and no ambition

I do not know where you live but it could not have been Willikies when the ABLP was in office, Robin made sure everyone had a good paying job and you did not have to back him for you to get help from him. by the way Willikies was a Ghost town after 9 am, you can drive to Willikies then and would not find a young person on the street hanging out unlike now. UPP bring no jobs, no housing, no food, look at the long list of young men from the village in jail now, never before dem wa work fu do.

Can you imagine this and the village has absolutely nothing to pride itself on. Drive through the village and all you see is either young men loafing by spring tank or by toppa hill.
