Browne Speaks Out On Tower Issue

Browne Speaks Out On Tower IssueAntigua St John's - Deputy Chairman of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) Gaston Browne, in an interview with Colin Sampson on Caribarena TV, has said the proliferation of cell phone towers is a serious health issue, and is surprised that the relevant minister still has not responded to Caribarena.

"As a minister, he has an obligation to account. And I think that Caribarena, and yourself as a member of Caribarena, that you have done the right thing to ask the minister to account," Browne said. He added that the expected response from the public has not come about, despite Caribarena's efforts.

One possible reason for this, Browne said, was that the issue is not political. "You're not hearing the kind of outrage, seeing as though how people are only emotional when it comes to politics," he said. "But even when it comes to the health of the nation and the health of our people, that you're not getting that type of emotion."

He added that even if the levels of radiation emitted by these towers was safe, the minister should have come forth and responded.

Browne also put some of the blame on his party, saying that it was a "failure" on the part of the opposition regarding its lack of activism on the issue. He said he would bring the issue up with his colleagues, and they would see how they can assist in forcing the government to respond.

However, he also said the responsibility is ultimately that of the government, and the opposition's contribution is limited.

The proliferation of cell phone towers and the health risk they may represent is a new issue in Antigua. Caribarena introduced this almost two months ago, and has been constantly releasing information on the towers and their effects since.

There were almost 100 towers discovered throughout the island. For almost 50 days, Minister of Information Technology Dr Edmond Mansoor has not issued an official response on the matter, nor has he answered the questions sent to him by Caribarena.

Questions were also sent to LIME and Digicel, and both companies have responded. Digicel responded on May 31, but LIME only sent its response July 18. Digicel's response was analyzed in another article, while LIME's response will be published and analyzed in an upcoming article.

We pay him not the PM

#17 Dig It » 2011-07-20 18:43

Well, 50 days and no response from Dr. Mongoose shows how self-worth and vindictive this unelected official is to the people! Imagine if he was elected. He would have probably tell us to take the matter to court. And, the PM still have him around collecting a salary from the tax payers! We pay him, so he owes us a response! In some countries, the Minister would be given an ultimatum to resign or make a statement! This is a potential serious health issue, and the most daring doctor of them all is playing cat and mouse!

MP Browne

MP Browne I for one thank for this information. Your involvement has at least provided information that at least something is happening. Hopefully, as stated in that interview with Caribarena TV, you have been able to convince your ALP colleagues that they will join in helping to ensure that the public health, if at risk, that steps will be taken to fix the problem.

RE: Browne Speaks Out On Tower Issue

Just took a look at Caribarena- Jamaica and Caribarena-Dominica and there are zero comments to the articles on these two websites compared to the Antiguan Version. Anyway it's nice that the minister felt that Gaston is the person he felt obliged to call and tell he will be making a statement next week. Did he not felt obliged to use the Government media to say something weeks ago if he did not wish to respond to Caribarena? Makes me wonder if Gaston did not open his mouth we would still not have gotten a response.

These guys do not know about politics 101; nip it in the bud early before it becomes a sore and whatever you do never go out of your way to make your opponents look good at your expense

I had a call from Minister Mansoor this morning and he confirmed that the Ministry of health will be issuing a statement on this issue later this week and that steps are being taken to conduct an independent study of the extent of the radiation emitted by these towers. He said that the cell phone providers have all denied that the level of radiation emitted would rise to the level of being a public health hazard. We await the press statement and the independent study.

why not

#13 peter » 2011-07-20 15:59

If there is concern about the towers it is the responsibility of all the people in charge to answer the questions that the people are concerned about, one cannot be so highminded and arrogant that they refuse to give some explanation to the peoples concern. So come on mr mansoor step up to the plate.

#12 Tobi » 2011-07-20 15:41

Tenman, what EXACTLY is Gaston's "stand on this issue"? It is once again wishful thinking on your part that has you imagining such a stand. Perhaps much credit should be given to the saneness of the public's lack of response to this issue. Despite the cooked clamor in some circles for the minister's response, this issue appears to lack any solid scientific evidence of being a serious health issue. If it indeed it had such, then people need to turn off their phones. Have YOU or Gaston done so? BTW with the recently added towers placed round south by APUA, we should all now be well on the way from medium to well-done!

I Onanu is closest to the point: both parties are compromised - hence the silence from both - Gaston got cornered on the issue - what else could he say without sounding totally idiotic?

More action and less politics

#10 I Onanu » 2011-07-20 13:46

I have no idea why Min Mansoor would not respond, especially since he is a medical doctor and there are health ramifications. That aside, Mr. Browne is just playing politics. He said: "... the responsibility is ultimately that of the government ...". I agree but most of these towers were built in the previous administration. In fact, I remember the whole debate back in the Airtel and AT&T days when they asked LIME and APUA for tower sharing and that was not supported by the administration then. Instead, we find ourselves in this predicament with both political parties using the health issues to score cheap points. When will our politicians rise above the pettiness and really address the issues for the benefit of the people.

I agree with most bloggers below. Skywell, you have hit the nail on the head. The Hon. Minister, as an appointed government official, does not have to answer to the people. His responsibility is to the master who has appointed him and as log as he satisfies his master, his job is secure. This is the main reason that I have advocated in the past for high-ranking government official to be elected by the people.

The most worrying thing is that nobody vote for Mansoor but nobody arrogant so! Both Shoul and Mansoor are leading Dr BS around by his nose. The man is the worst excuse possible for a leader.

Indifference

#6 Buzzbomb » 2011-07-20 10:52

Kudos to Caribarena for reporting on this island wide health concern and keeping it in the spotlight.
To me the lengthy silence from Mansoor shows this government's indifference toward the people.

Advisor to Mansoor: " Mr. Minister...the peasants are revolting".
Mansoor: "Yes I know, they are truely disgusting".
Advisor to Mansoor: "No, I said they were revolting".
Mansoor: "What's the difference"?

Let's hope Gaston presses the issue further.

For once, I agree with Mr. Browne. It is rather unfortunate, Mr. Mansoor has not yet come forward with reasons/explanations pertaining to such a critical issue.

#3 IphBBNokSamMoto » 2011-07-20 08:35

Come on, he will not respond unless he can paint it his way, unfortunately,
with all the information out there, his efforts to add more microwave antennas around the island, with his dream to give everyone access to the internet through hxs oxx company, how is he going to do that. also, is that not a conflict of interest.

Brown is right

#2 Skyewill » 2011-07-20 07:15

Even if the minister in charge agree or disagree with any position, he is responsible to the people of Antigua and Barbud to respond. So why is he not responding? One can only guess, and if one is to guess you may not be right but we do need an answer. I never expect the minister to respond so I guess. First you would have to care about people and their health concerns so I guess the minister don't car. Why should he? He has a ministry and have not gotton one vote from the people, he don't need nobody to maintain his power. He don't even have to run for anything just show up and be a minister. My other guess is that he have no clue on how to respond so why bother or maybe he is just too big and important ( more important than you and me). These are some funny times and these are some funny people. Say the song goes. When they have power and authority they don't give a ________ about nobody." I'm just guessing!!

Well it is often I agree with Gaston but on this important issue I have to agree. Now this is something whear the opposition is in the best position to get answeres thru various avenues. Questions to ministers in parliament being one such. The one thing we can bet on is that cancer knows no political colour.
