Antigua St John's - In the summer of 2011, Caribarena began raising questions about the number of cell phone towers in Antigua & Barbuda.
There seemed to be a disproportionately large number of towers, many of them also called “base-stations,” located near homes, schools, and businesses.
Whether or not the radiation from these towers is capable of inflicting physical or biological harm upon those nearby on a daily basis is still unclear.
The global scientific community has been tossing and turning, with groups and organisations pushing for both sides of the battle.
It was Caribarena’s conclusion that while uncertainty is still in the air, it was far better to pursue the more cautious approach than to assume that the towers are harmless. Caribarena’s drive for the issue resulted in a study, conducted by George Skvarca of PAHO.
Skvarca measured the radiation emitted by select towers only over a few days. The preliminary results of his brief study were broadcast live on ABS TV.
During the press conference, Caribarena asked Skvarca a lot of questions. The complete conference can be watched on Caribarena’s YouTube channel.
However, the press conference’s most important function was the release of Skvarca’s study.
Skvarca said he needed a week to prepare the study, which would then be sent to the Government of Antigua & Barbuda.
Caribarena was told that once Cabinet reviewed the report, it would be released to the public.
Officer of the Telecommunications Division Clement Samuel assured Caribarena he would see to it that Caribarena was sent the report ASAP.
The press conference was held on August 22.
The report created by Skvarca has not been released.

Caribarena sent two e-mails to Samuel and Minister of Telecommunications Dr Edmond Mansoor, requesting the release of the report.
The first was sent on January 3, and the second was on January 16.
Today, a month has passed since our last attempt to contact the government, and we are yet to receive any response.
