ABLP Full Recording - Corruption Can't Fight Corruption

Corruption Can't Fight CorruptionAntigua St. John's - Today, for the first time, Caribarena is releasing a complete recording.

In the recording, the voices of Asot Michael, Lester Bird, and Robin Yearwood can be heard. The trio discuss the ins and outs of a corrupt scheme that made them millions of dollars.

This recording is the first part of a series in which Caribarena will release all of its complete recordings.

While the ABLP promise to enact new anti-corruption policies in its manifesto, the legitimacy of this promise is erased when you take into account that all three men in this recording are still senior and leading members of the ABLP.

Can the corrupt fight corruption?

Both the main parties are corrupt - corruption seems to go with the terrority as far as politics in Antigua is concerned. Because of this, the choice seems to between one group of politicians who are incompetent and corrupt (UPP) vs the other group who are definitely corrupt but perhaps marginally less incompetent (ABLP). This is not a good place to be. So the deciding factor is are you safer and better off now than when UPP came to power and are you likely to be so in the future. I guess the answer for most people would be no, given the violent crime wave and the destruction of the economy. If you have to elect **s, you might as well go for the less incompetent ones.

Dig It, I hope you are wrong. We and I mean quiet a lot of people are getting tired of this corrupt game without any consequences. UPP had promised us change in 2004. We got more of the same and worst. Gaston is once again promising change. He has begun showing that he really means it. Let’s wait and see. I really hope he brings some change. I don’t fool myself. It will be hard. But every little change helps. And we the people should really get more involve in our politics and when it comes to our reporters! They should all be fired. They have done us a great disservice by being very partisan in their reporting.

And whatever the ALP candidates say in the Snake Pit will be replayed for the UPP supporters to react on and they spin and twist every word being said. And that they call fair and balance reporting. Reporters that fail to ask the tough and hard questions from our politicians. To get answers on the things that matters. Things that concerns us all. Up to now not one has ask Lovell how he can come to the people of Antigua year in year out without having given account for ten years. Without having given account for a concert under his authority. None ask those questions of the minister. But they have him on the radio to promote his agenda. How fair and balance reporting. CA is slowly joining the group.

Indeed if the intension of the release of the tape was a noble cause it would certainly have a better effect on the people. But all CA seeks to achieve is to deny the ABLP a victory at the poll. Had they stayed neutral and exposed both corruption in both parties equally we would not have such an issue with it. But CA now is like Observer saying they are not partisan. Who would believe Observer when they say that? But still they are trying each day to reclaim that image. But whenever a UPP politician is on the program, whether it is Voice of the People or Snake Pit, all you get is soft ball cricket. No fast bowling. No spin bowling. Actually I think they are pathetic. Lovell and all the other get away without being asked the hard questions. And when the new guy Daryl has Arthur Nibbs on the phone in his morning program he always brings in some UPP operative like Winston Henry without having warned Nibbs before. Like an ambush.

We heard the tapes of the distortion of monies from the Hadeed’s. But one should also ask why Hadeed was chosen to provide all these services like APC without having to bid on it. And the same is happening and still going on under the UPP. No tendering for many projects. But CA is quiet and the people are quiet on these practices. See how the tendering for the dredging of the harbor went. And not to mention always many cost overruns. We should have policies and systems where politician are not involve whatsoever in awarding contracts. They should not even make recommendations or appoint persons on boards. It’s like giving your accountant, sole signatory on your bank account. Guess what can happen. Yes he can clean you out without you knowing it. Investors should completely stop meeting with politicians. Only if it is a government project. Politicians job is to enhanced the welfare of the citizens that choose them to so do. Instead our politician are there to enriched themselves and bring hardship on those they have a bone to pick. They use and miss-use state power for their personal gain. And as long as we condone this it will continue. No matter how much CA wants to write about it.

But on the other hand. I do trust and hope that the new candidates will make a huge different in the politics of the Labour Party. And I do trust and hope that Gaston will eventually allow the justice system to run its course on both ALP and UPP corruption and Antigua people may once and for all make a fresh start of politicians that are not involved in corrupt practices. I have also stated in one post when listening to the same tapes. That the corruption talked about is a kickback. Which means it did not take money out of the Treasury. It ** money out of Rappaport. Out of WIOC. WIOC is making the backdoor deals with these guys in order to remain the sole importer for fuel. Believe me the same is still happening. And don’t think the Laptops and the Tablets are free as in FREE. These are all deals. I scratch your back and you scratch mine. Anyone following the investigations in to the bridge closure in New Jersey would have come to the conclusion how corrupt these guys are even in the US. That’s what big money does. It makes our politician corrupt. I therefore hope we can enact laws that can deal with the root of corruption. Our business men. Families that bribe politicians just to get business from the government.

I do not condone corruption. Whether ABLP or UPP. But the ABLP corruption is to me now on the back burner vs the present corruption that is not getting any attention whatsoever for reasons we all know. But all is fair in politics. Question is with all the corruption in ALP how come people had so much and now under the UPP with presumably no or little corruption we do not have anything and poverty is rampant all over the country. And do remember that he UPP in office has not accounted for anything whatsoever. Ten years and no audited public accounts. No accounts for the millions spend on a concert. No accounts on monies spend on Side Walks. No accounts for monies spend on Bathroom at Jasco. No accounts for the monies spend on roads around the Stadium, No accounts for Fencing of the sport fields. No accounts for the monies spend on the WPP and the list goes on and on. But let’s focus on ALP corruption of years gone by. That is very important and that will at least give the UPP a better change of staying in office and cause many of us with their bad economic policies coupled with the allege corruption in all the above, lots and lots of hardship. I do hope ABLP wins for this simple reason. Life will be better under Labour. The economy will be better under labour. People will have a better life under labour. Because of the plans, because of the policies.

Don’t forget what the QC Johnny Cheltenham during the MBS inquiry had to say about Dr. Cort in his role in having the MBS paid his law firm the bill for legal fees that Stanford refused to pay. Then Lester Bird took the decision to fire him and Percival. But the UPP welcomed him with open arms. And he became their triumph in the election of 2004. Giving all sort of alliance with the Stanford Group.

Vere have you ever publicly condemned your father for his corrupt practices coming out of the Bloom Cooper inquiry. And have you given back all the assets that you personally have benefited from as a son. What monies do you think paid for your education? Your father was found to be involved in corruption. Not allege? Which is like a child of a bank robber enjoying the fruits from his father’s ill-gotten gains. Why you think the Judge in the Stanford trial order that all the Assets from Stanford given to his daughter and sons be taken back? You on the other hand have not given back anything that your father earned legal or illegally. Yet you of all persons think you have the authority to cast judgment unto your father’s cohorts. Try to cleanse yourself by just removing yourself is not enough. You should give back everything to charity. Because almost none of what you own was acquired honestly.

After careful thought I have come to the conclusion that if these tapes were not doctored then we can not trust the people in authority, or the leaders of this country. They are all guilty. If these tapes are in fact doctored then we have a more serious situation whereby they are only being used as weapons because persons are power hungry or want revenge because things didn't go their way. People ask yourselves these questions two questions, if the tapes were doctored, why is it the persons who were recorded not defending themselves? If they were not doctored why the inaction from those who lead? The recordings only seem to be troubling to us the voters while both parties sit back comfortable watching the cock fight.

The government is not charged with investigation of anything. the judicial system is.Which one of the government minister is an investigator? I know some of them are lawyers but that is simply not the role government play. The system is obviously broken and is in need or dire repairs. That is so for the people also we are broken and in need of urgent repair. Can GB do it? what will force him to address curruption? Has he shown anything to any of his backers that indicate he is serious in tackling corruption? oh yes he has and that is the corruption of the opposition not that of his party/colleagues. I would wait for answers to those specific questions not no diatribe about your hated opposition. Deal with it if you can.

Some news ten years ago alleges that people in offices were shredding documents for weeks and days before the 2004 election. It is amazing that these backer have the GALL to mount this defence of these ruthless indefencible farts. They offers no apology but why that would mean admitting that these might be genuine eh. Moreso they do not at any time proposes any way of prosecuting offenders. No way of getting our seemingly inept DPP or AG office (judicial system prosecute future offenders). Yet they are here ranting and raving rarely addressing the issue on the tape. This is pure deflection. If only they were genuinely concern about Antigua and Barbuda; clearly they are for their pockets, bellies and everything that, about other stu is coming to them should they win the election. Is the PM in charge of our judicial system. Can someone answer me that one there as it seems everyone expects him to say who to prosecute. Last time I check A&B is a democratic state. What is the role of the DPP office in this whole sordid affair. They are the ones deciding who to charged or has it change?. Last reading of the Privy council decision would indicate some faultline in the system between DPP and the Police. The DPP refusal to charge SCB for his role in the passport fraud matter. I understand how difficult it is to prosecute these money men. Small fry like meself is no issue cause I can't even afford a lawyer much less to mount a defence all the way a privy council. This is unfortunate that possibly 90% of people in A & B is in this category hence the little man get jail while big wicks walk around with heads in the clouds.

I mean he should have been the first one to send out the clarion call for action to be taken. Just saying also that Caribarena was closely allied with the rank and file of the ABLP and then they fell out, it would appear now that its allegiance is with the UPP. Are we to go another five year stretch without any action being taken concerning these serious criminal acts? What is the government doing about it? Will they forget once re-elected to office? Again is it enough for us to just hear these recordings so we may vote UPP. Will we be hearing a plan of action from Baldwin Spencer before election or will he continue to keep quiet?

Heads in the sand

#40 Bill Maher » 2014-06-04 11:43

My observations on how the majority of people in Antigua and Barbuda operate when it comes to politics.

The current situation is easily explained. We have a ruling party that has, to put it politely, been rather sluggish with its management of the country. Accusations of corruption have been put forth, but we are yet to see any hard evidence.
On the other side we have a political party that has a history of corruption and mismanagement. One only has to read 'Caribbean Time Bomb', to find the details. Also, you have recordings of ABLP politicians talking about their corruption and illegal activities.
So it seems that the majority of ABLP supporters are willing to bury their heads in the sand; similar to the GOP in the USA! Perhaps these are the same people who think the world is 5000 years old, or in denial about climate change, etc, etc. Basically morons that deny FACT BASED EVIDENCE!
Readers of Caribarena are quick to slate the people who commit crimes on this island, such as the manager of Cashwiz, the people who commit crimes with lethal weapons, etc. Yet when they hear politicians, who have been recorded talking about their corrupts ways and criminal activities, they give them a pass.
Anyway, watch my show this Friday on HBO!

Bill.

If you have a house and it is infested with termites, a fresh coat of paint only makes it a pretty infested house. I am at a loss for words as to why GB haven't, and doesn't seem prepared to, denounce the actions of these guys and sanction them, instead, he holds them even closer to his bosom despite knowing about their misdeeds. Leadership does matter.

The UPP should not be left off the hook either. Their delay in pursuing justice for the very people they claim they love and serve (despite paying for investigations with the people's money) speaks very clearly to their incompetence and negligence. Are they failing to act, because they fear what might befall them should they lose the next election? I wonder! Again, leadership does matter.

I sure hate to see my beloved ANU being treated like an abused woman trapped in a love triangle, whose only choice seem to be the very men who've been abusing her all her life.

I know you don't understand simple things as quickly and easily as the rest of us, but before you go thinking that the government engaged in making deals that was contrary to or forbidden by law with any of those dishonest and unscrupulous people, I want to remind you that Bruce Rappaport made a settlement with the Antigua and Barbuda government in the amount of $US12 million. And this was not kept as a secret in any way. So, with that understanding, is it possible that Bruce Pappaport is the person the voice was suggesting made the deal with the government? You can believe all you want that the UPP government is involved in criminal activities, but you will never find any evidence to support or prove that you are right. The fact that many members who will become senior ministers were involved in serious corrupt dealings should give rise for concern.

How can we elect such group of people we know engaged in a good deal of immoral and evil acts ( frauds and schemes) to govern our country and then look our children and grandchildren in the face and tell them we love them? If we truly love our children and grandchildren we would want to secure a good future for them by electing leaders with decency and moral uprightness to govern our country--not leaders whom we are aware have lost their way and have become evil and, as a result, betrayed their country and its people! Corrupt people are not going to fight corruption because they have already breached the moral laws that govern their conduct. They engaged in immoral activities. They know the difference between right and wrong; yet, they chose to do the wrong anyway. So we have to continue to vote to keep them out.

These are the same men who will once again be senior cabinet members of a Gaston Brown lead government should they be returned to office. It stands to reason that Gaston who was once employed at the now defunct Swiss American Bank was aware of the money laundering scheme and kickbacks that was taking place at the time.

How the DPP can still refuses to bring charges against these men for misbehavior in public office boggles the mind and stinks to high heaven. The government did its part by hiring Lindquist to trace their ill-gotten gain yet to date no charges have been laid against these vagabonds. How can anyone listening to the recording still say it is doctored? Prior to the UPP taking office and returning the pride we were known as one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Just read the link one of many found on the web and ask yourself this question, why would anyone who love their country want to return these gangsters to office, headed by a new boss

Politicians like to play a broken record!

#21 Dig It » 2014-06-04 08:25

When all is said and done, more will be said than done. My friends, the question we should honestly ask ourselves...is there enough laws in place to fight corruption with the signatures of all politicians? Why hasn't a "referedum" put on the ballot on June 12 on corruption that calls for serious penalties and possible ban from political life if found guilty? They (politicians) can't! Ask yourself why? They prefer to use us to play their "rysh-and-dutty" politricks. Not all of us will fall for their type of war. All we are getting is just empty words and a broken record to fight corruption from them. My friends while you are raising your blood-pressure...our politicians are out whining and dinning each other. After June 12 we are back to sqaure. Nothing change just a seat or color.

The choice is clear...between a party whose leaders are corrupt according to CAs report or a party who knew about ALPs corruption before taking office, said they were a righteous government, and then proceeded to commit similar corrupt acts. I am of the view that the same callous disregard for the nation's **ts were shown during the planning of the wpp fiasco and the fencing scandal both of which are in millions of dollars as well. The accountability promised has not been realised to date because it is now over 700 days that the current Government has not released the requisite docs. June 12 the electorate will determine who is better not CA.

True Labour, you now have the opportunity to break this cycle, trend of corrupt practices by MP. Some races are not for the swift and the Political Race is one such race. Show the People the Equal and Opposite Force which will cancel, illiminate these types of Governance and this Force will gain momentum as it Propels Our Nation forward, in a new direction and new destiny, a different course.

And yet under the UPP Government Leroy King remains a free man and Antigua refuse to extradite him.
Under the UPP the then Finance minister who law firm was being paid thousands of dollars each month by Allen Stanford was never investigated for his role in the Caribbean's largest ever ponzi scheme. In fact the PM Dr Spencer actually said without any kind of investigation Mr Cort's character is beyond reproach.

The UPP is corrupt period!

There are two types of ABLP leaders!! Those that are corrupt and the others that turn a blind eye to the corruption.

They have been calling me crazy because I left, but when I talk about what took place not one of the ABLP leaders or supporters can say I am a liar.

Long Live True Labour!!!

In light of the tapes, the bottom line is that this election will be about being able to survive (pay bills, buy food, live comfortably, having a job etc). This is the reality. Maybe if it was 2004 then this would help the UPP, but this is 2014. The majority of the populace want to see the back end of the FAILED upp.

Youth from South, your so strong desire for change has warped your mind as to what is right and wrong. You are so misguided. These men have stolen your patrimony and you still want to give them more power to take it all away. Do you really understand what is happening here? Have you listened to the tapes? Are Lester Bird's pronouncements about the young child's tits fiction to you? The money we spent to educate you seems to have been wasted.

The faction of the ALP which broke ranks to form their own Movement, more than likely, saw, knew, felt, smelt enough of the "funk" of the old Leadership, and realized that the ALP ship was in rough waters and could be sunk. While, this might be true, True Labour, the unfortunate reality of the moment, is, the Ship is named Our Parliament, and all UPP, is a different Crew at the helm.
One reason why, Our Judiciary have been slow in enacting Our Laws, to prosecute this type of 'law breaking' is, the crossing of the aisle by Individual MP, and in a Nation with the size of Our's, this is the dagger in prosecuting and getting convictions.

Just like you other people can change. Not because they are politicians dont necessarily mean that they cant change. I can bet you have made mistakes somewhere in your life, and have begged forgiveness. Yes they are leaders and should have showed examples, but at the end of the day we are all humans and are capable of messing up. We have all sin and have asked forgiveness. God is bigger than politicians, mankind, and has forgiven us. We still need a change, and thats what is important.

ABLP will win the election

#11 wadadman1 » 2014-06-04 07:08

I am not surprise at the eve of an election CA is bringing out these recordings at an alarming pace. During the period of time of these alleged corruption, my standard of living was way better than it is now. I will be voting ABLP .The others of you can ask yourself them these question.
1) Because of the recordings will you rather your family to live in poverty?
2)Because of the recordings will you rather watch your family be robbed and murder due to the high crime rate?
3)Because of the recording, will you rather watch your children starve to death?
4)Because of the recording, will rather watch your friends, family and neighbor be put on the breadline due to divestment?
5)Because of the recording, do you prefer an IMF program that will eventually turns Antigua worst off than Haiti?

When thieves fall out, the beans spill, names named, and the conscience of the reading electorate becomes enlightened! If we all say nothing, and sweep it under the rug, can that not be considered compliance? Can we with any good reason fail to act with the lead finger? This revelation is the culmination of a set of facts which cannot be ignored, and the names and the same faces wish to take us back to that same place again! Better to wait another five years for them to vanish into oblivion, for we all now know they will not be punished by man. Their names will be forgotten by the people when the new leaders of our beautiful island take the reins from the current stand- in government. God Bless Antigua!

What is most indicting in all this is that one of the voices alleges that someone "HAS CUT A DEAL WITH THE GOVERNMENT!" (01:42 into the recording)

The Government is the UPP! What is the "deal"? Who in the UPP Government was the alleged deal "cut" with?

Is this why nothing has happened about these allegations? If one side guilty - then both sides are guilty!

#6 WE HAVE NO MORALS » 2014-06-04 06:17

Wow I am amazed that we listen to these recordings of corruption and kickbacks over and over and it was evident that these people were getting a jackpot every month from all corners, Could this money have been used back then to pay debts to SS, MB, APUA and the overseas debt we incurred at the time. Could it have been used to provide scholarships for the bright young Antiguans who couldn't afford University education?? Some justify the wrongs by saying UPP is corrupt to I,e, fences, sidewalks etc..what we have with UPP is poor value for money but we can identify the bad projects with ALP the money went in pockets of a few.

Two Questions

#5 Logics » 2014-06-04 06:05

Firstly, if this government had all this evidence why was no action taken against theses **s? and Secondly, why is W.I.O.C. still even in operation? If this is not good enough reason to put an end to all monopolies in this country then we will end up like Haiti. Could W.I.O.C still be the only fuel supplier in town because a similar agreement for kickbacks exists today, just that the "companies" that are receiving the proceeds have changed? The fat cats and their friends purring contently while the stray cats fighting in the alleys for the scraps!

#4 Samakan » 2014-06-04 05:38

And these three are on the tickets of the New Antigua Barbuda Labour Party and we the people are asked to re-elect. My Gosh if we do we as a people deserve the wrath of God seriously.. It is blatant. Yes UPP had some corruption. But look at what Baldwin did with those accused of corruption. They were marginalized….. but Labour Party gives you a promotion for corrupt activities. I will vote for Labour Party when… these three exit…until then I can't…I simply couldn't sleep at night knowing I put these people back in power…knowing and hearing this for myself,,, just can't do it...

#3 access view point » 2014-06-04 05:29

while anyone can appreciate that these recordings are unfortunate and place the labour party in an unfavourable light, this recording is quite old as I can record hearing this on Caribarena months ago so this is nothing new to amount to new incriminating evidence. Yes there have been elements of alleged corruption within the ALP we all see that and I as a supporter would not be fooled to notice that there have been some unethical decisions taken by some officials of the ALP. However if for one minute you think the UPP government have not done worse in how they conduct their internal and personal affairs god forbid UPP looses the upcoming general election as only then would fraudulent and corrupt practices would come to light. Again as most of us that read articles from Caribarena are intelligent individuals and are professionals must ask the question if upp were in opposition after being in government would Caribarena or other media outlets be putting out corruption tapes against a labour party government ? very unlikely again why isn't it that Errol Cort name isn't in the media for suspected unethical practices about the Stanford fiasco and his alleged hotel he is building overseas again you think if this occurred undercover deals were not conducted? what about Daniel and his array of expensive vehicles as he is been in government for 10 years and has more luxury cars than all of the candidates put together and again what company does he have to afford him the finances

Is anybody more corrupt than the UPP? We have tangible proof if their corruption. FENCING, POWER PLANT, SIDEWALKS, YASCO, THE STADIUM IN RURAL EAST, CIP, CAR PARK etc and the list goes on and on. I guess you guys are really working for your money. Since we're on the nite of corruption, what about that news reporter guy that interfered with the CHILD? I hope the question is not rhetorical since I want to answer it.

No, the corrupt cannot fight corruption. ABLP cannot fight corruption. A leper cannot change it's spot. The manifesto is sheer brinkmanship.

If Gaston was serious about winning the elections, he would have parted ways with Asot, Lester and Robin a long time ago. It's too late now though.

There is no way the ABLP can win the elections, not from what I am hearing on the ground. The people of Antigua/Barbuda are not going back there. We have not forgotten.
