Resident Criticises Parham Police

Resident Criticises Parham PoliceAntigua St. John's - A Parham resident has lashed out at officers at the Parham police station for failing to act promptly on a report of an alleged death threat.

The woman, who called into a local radio station to voice her displeasure, said operatives of the opposition came to the campaign office of Clephane "Mr Terrific" Roberts and threatened the staff.

At the time, there were reportedly about five women and two men, including the United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate for the area.

One of the men allegedly said, "Ar' you go dead." Further allegations are that someone was armed with a weapon.

The frightened women went to Parham Police Station to make a report.

Reports are that officers told them not to make any noise in the station or they would be locked up.

One of the women, who is disabled, became emotional.

The officers reportedly asked the victims why they were complaining, because people associated with the UPP also pulled down posters.

The Parham resident questioned the officer's motive for saying what he did, because the report was about a threat and had nothing to do with the destruction of election paraphernalia.

She said that while the report was being made, one of the men drove in front of the station in a vehicle in an intimidating manner.

"I don't care about billboards. Billboards can't vote. I was concerned about my safety," said the woman.
She was very critical of the Parham Police Station, and the officers stationed there are not committed to serving the community.

"I don't know how they (officers) function," she said. "I'm confused as to what they do for the citizens of Antigua & Barbuda, other than drive around in air-conditioned vehicles that they just receive, and drop off people to and from school, and to and from work."

According to the woman, she has been the victim of several crimes and has now become fed up since Parham police officers seemed not to be doing anything.

The woman said no one has called her to give her an update on the investigations or reassure her by having a drive through in her area.

She questioned how the police stand up for people when they do not function for people?

"And they never have transportation at the station. I am beyond frustrated. Parham (Police Station) is unbelievable. Small community, small station, and every week I get robbed, and up to now they cannot even find one suspect. No investigation whatsoever," the woman noted.

She continued, "And I could care less who is listening. I will say it loud and clear, Parham Police Station does not function. It does not even need to exist, because when you call them, they can't do nothing for you."
The woman said it is time for officers to begin foot patrols again in the various communities.

According to her, they complain of not having vehicles, but after receiving them, they refuse to patrol or visit the scene after a report is made.

She noted that she has been dealing with the Parham Police Station for about three years, and has had to walk to the station in every instance to lodge a report.

This lady need to get her own weapon to protect herself if she's been robbed several times. Why should politics play a part if the police has to respond to a crime. Does the police ask which party you belong to and then they will decide if they should investigate the crime?

If the police dont' want to work under UPP that them no like you think them go work under ABLP? That is when they will sleep on the job and talk on phones for long hrs while ignoring persons standing in front of them waiting to make a report. especially since they are complaining that they have to work too hard under this government.

The fact that the police responded the way he did to this woman/or these women leaves a lot question in ones mind.

I ask the question who are the police working for political parties or are the suppose to protect and serve the people of this country. If this woman can walk to go make the report then the police should be able to the same.

I can personally attest that the poor response of the police is not confined to Parham, although I will say that there are many officers who do perform their duties diligently. There is a fundamental deficiency in the way that some officers view their responsibilities. The Constitution guarantees to all persons the protection of the law. It is up to the government to show some leadership and see to it that the police perform in a professional manner. I am not at all convinced that the ABLP would do any better than the UPP.

The ABLP and their Jamaican operatives are hell bent on bringing Jamaican garrison politics to Antigua. Also the impertinent keystone cop should be fired post haste.
