Top Cop Pleased with Crime Solution Rate

Police Commissioner Vere BrowneAntigua St. John's - Although he said things could always be improved, Police Commissioner Vere Browne said yesterday that he is pleased with the solution rate of violent crimes in Antigua & Barbuda.

Speaking on Observer Radio, Browne announced that arrests had been made in connection with some of the most recent robberies.

Quantifying the solution rate, the top cop said more than 50 percent of matters involving armed robberies had been solved, with other suspects currently in police custody.

Browne noted that some of the business people are not doing enough to secure their properties.

"There is no mesh and no burglar bars - so if a car passes and causes something to break the glass of one of these business places, it makes it very easy for criminals to enter. You must protect your investment," he said.

He added that criminals are always monitoring business owners' movements, and urged, "We have to change our practices."

The commissioner admitted that the police do not have all the answers, and added that everyone has a role to play in the fight against crime. He also said that much more could be done if more vehicles and human resource were available.

Meanwhile, there have been talks about a meeting between the police and business owners to address the crime situation.

One such meeting is pending, said Browne, who added that in the past, only about six business people would show up.

And with the general elections only a week away, Browne said all the polling stations will be outfitted with police officers to ensure that order prevails.

He warned against wearing party colours to vote, and advised that the selling and distributing of alcoholic beverages would be prohibited between the opening and closing of the polling stations on election day.

Browne also said that he hopes the candidates will use the remaining days to advise their followers of the do's and don'ts  from the podium.

On the subject of several politicians making reports of unlawful home invasions, Browne said some of the cases might have been amplified on the political stage.

He said he was not inclined to say that some of the crimes were related to the elections - since even outside election season people are charged with offences such as house break-ins and using threatening language.

Browne noted, however, that about 12 hours before the Observer interview, reports of posters and billboards destruction were still being made.

Those caught committing such acts will be liable to answer to a charge of malicious damage, he said.

Furthermore, Browne said he does not anticipate any trouble during the elections - but if any unrest arises, his troops will be ready, since they are currently sharpening their skills in the Trade Winds exercise.

I think the Commissioner's pay check should match his success rate! Put him on half pay until the success rate improves. Then ask him if he thinks 50 % is sufficient.

The really funny thing is, well funny in a sad way, is that they're going to elect another Antiguan next week. Just a few decades ago, they were British.

It's just sad.

Good to see you smile Commissioner; we know you haven't received the welcome usually bestowed upon a COP, and arriving when the gates of Hell was thrown wide open in Antigua/Barbuda. you came without doing the necessary research, you needed to reach out to the people who knew, who, are the trouble makers and where to get help and how to find them, the Criminals. you can still try, but your boss must be kept in the dark on some things. those White guys before you could have told you what you are up against. your Star has been Tarnished the moment you step into the political arena here in A/B..

GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER MR. BROWNE

#18 NONSENCE, DUNCENESS » 2014-06-06 12:27

About 3 mths or more ago, the COP when asked on observer radio by a caller about the murder of the man at his home in the Lngfords area, said words to the effect that the police have credible evidence and an arrest is imminent, now is June and we have not heard of an arrest. When any arrest is made for any crime the police usually let the public know but I have not heard of the 50% arrest with robberies. COME ON MAN LET US KNOW THEN.
We need to be comfortable, can't stand it anymore.

Is this commissioner referring to Antigua? What solution of rate crime is he referring to? I don't live there but I read the news everyday. In the last 2-3 weeks there were so many robberies. Why does the police need any more vehicles when they just received a new fleet? They need to work with the people of different neighborhoods and organize a neighborhood crime watch program with the residents. In my neighborhood, I am the captain of my block and I have the telephone numbers of the police officers responsible for my area. I advise my neighbors that if they see any strange person please call the police or 911. It is working . Please give that a try Mr. Browne.

More random patrols

#7 Logics » 2014-06-06 06:37

I would like to know what do the Police do with all the new vehicles they just got from Harney motors. All I ever see them doing is going from one station to another- sort of like a messenger pigeon. That's what phones and e-mail is for. Get officers into these vehicles and out into the communities to patrol the streets and stop and question suspicious characters and activities; and to curb speeding and all the other stupid things people do on the road. Possibly then when will arrest these 4 cowards who go around robbing the hard working business people of this country almost daily with little to no information coming from the Police regarding this gang of thugs. And to all citizens please keep you eyes open and look around your neighbourhoods. Someone is going to recognise that a few young men are suddenly looking very prosperous. Report what you see because they are not only going after big businesses. The small businesses are being hit too. You might be watched right now and today just may be your turn.

I must agree with the commissioner with this one. The business people need to assist the police with better security. Look at in the USA they have the resources but most crimes are solved with great policing and the aid of security cameras. Businesses have been lazy for too long.

50 percent of matters

#1 Skyewill » 2014-06-06 04:16

Sir, where are your standards? 50% is failure. I have never been to any institution that would consider 50% acceptable. Your suggestion that the police is only responsible for minimum Security is dead wrong. you are responsibility for Maximum security of the people. There are children and elderly and single mothers and people who can not defend themselves or afford mesh and steal Bars. Your defeatist attitude simply says you are not the one we need. While you worried about people using alcohol, something you will not control, we the people worried about getting our door kicked in. Criminals must be ecstatic knowing that 50%of them are free to cause havoc. Your policy is totally wrong, It encourages and motivate criminals.
