Govt has Big Plans for Ports

Port planAntigua St. John's - The governing party has outlined its plans for the nation's ports after the general elections.

A release from Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer said his United Progressive Party (UPP) planned a complete overhaul of the Deep Water Harbour facility, to include the construction of "warehousing facilities, outlet malls, Mediterranean style restaurants, a state of the art promenade leading from the ship and designated taxi stand."

The party's release is reprinted below in full.

NEW AIRPORT AND SEAPORT ARE SOLID EXAMPLES OF GREAT UPP LEADERSHIP

The United Progressive Party Government will in its third term undertake a complete overhaul of the infrastructure at the Port of St. John's.

This massive overhaul will include the construction of new buildings and the installation of new equipment and machinery.

Prime Minister, Honourable. Dr. Baldwin Spencer says: "The transformation of the existing port facilities is part of a larger, progressive plan to turn the port into a vibrant, economic hub for both the capital city and for the Nation as a whole."

"My Government's plan is to also establish an Economic Free Zone within the port facilities which will function as a centre for trading, manufacturing and assembly warehousing. This transformation is vitally important to the expansion of the port, and scores of high quality jobs will be created," Prime Minister Spencer declared.

Among the features of the port development project is a full scale container terminal boasting multiple cranes, and new modern shipping equipment.

Port plan

Additionally, the port will be equipped with a cruise ship terminal featuring warehousing facilities, outlet malls, Mediterranean style restaurants, a state of the art promenade leading from the ship and designated taxi stand.

The port transformation will also see the development of a full scale home porting operation making Antigua and Barbuda a nexus linking air, sea and land traffic.

The United Progressive Party has already delivered on its commitment to construct a new airport, which is scheduled for opening in the fourth quarter of 2014.

The new airport facility, which will allow Antigua and Barbuda to welcome more visitors than ever before, features five new air bridges, modern customs and immigration facilities, economy and business class lounges as well as automated baggage handling systems.

These two projects will ensure that the Antigua and Barbuda economy remains on its current upwards and forwards path and the economic giant of the OECS

This port will boom again receiving and exporting goods so think big and leave this alone. UPP wished they had it booming today importing and exporting big time but nothing great is happening in exports but with ABLP at the help the port should hum again.

All this for a port that handles 4 weekly cargo vessels and one more bi-monthly. For a Port which has seen a drop of over 40% in cargo shipments. Shouldn't we just build for what we have with a modest increase in size and leave plans open for further expansion.

I ALWAYS KNOW THAT LIARS DON'T HAVE GOOD MEMORY. WHEN FOOD CITY BUILDING WAS BOUGHT IT WAS SAID TO BE PART OF THE REDEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION OF THE PORT. WONDER WHY SOME PEOPLE WOULD SAY THINGS AND KNOW BETTER THAN WHAT THEY ARE DOING. ALL I CAN SAY IS LORD HAVE MERCY ON OUR SOULS.

Ministers/Government s of the day idea is to borrow as much money as they can in the name of ANU/BAR air marked for projects that they give to their cronies where some of that money will end up in these ministers bank account while the m** suffer and the nation cannot afford to repay. The majority of these ministers of both this and former admin should be put before a firing squad and this would deter others from indulged in such practices. So many projects budgets are overrun by as much as 500% and some are incomplete; former ministers have interest in deals that stagnate the nation and they the politicians see that some bloggers are defending/justifying their actions. I am really mad to see how they are taking this island for the cash cow; even the statutory boards are getting out of hand.

Workers getting paid late, an unfinished car park, the WPP stood idle and you are dreaming of building a new port??

As for the airport, what did the UPP actually do? Go out with a begging bowl, take out a huge loan to build the airport, then the jobs go to Chinese not Antiguans and the government agrees to hundreds more Chinese being given citizenship on Antigua.

One last question for Mr Spencer and the UPP. Where is the money coming from to build this new port? Another huge loan that we as an island will default on?

No investors are coming here under your governance so where is the money coming from, and wouldn't it be better to put the money into Mount St. Johns who desperately need it to cover their operating expenses?

Question to bloggers...

#6 Julian » 2014-06-04 07:05

To all the learned bloggers on this site, I'm curious to know why neither of the parties seem to be taking credit for the AUA at Jabberwok.
This facility seems very successful & brings much needed revenue from student spending & I presume, money coming in for any lease agreement of the property.

Not Making Sense

#5 Logics » 2014-06-04 06:21

Something here does not make sense. Why do we want to put passenger facilities at a area that is for commercial cargo and manufacturing? Isn't the whole idea of Heritage Quay and the Redcliffe Quay areas to keep tourist away from the commercial port? So we going to carry tourist back down to the dangers of the commercial port area and then what happens to the two facilities that were built to deal with the cruise ships? And a "Mediterranean " style shopping area? like the "Italian" styled shopping area? Why the hell not a "WEST INDIAN" styled shopping area? If tourist wanted to see the Mediterranean I quite sure they would have gotten on a ship to take them over there not one to come to the Caribbean.

Obviously you have not read the UPP's manifesto, for the construction of the new port is clearly laid out therein.

Once again, stop taking credit for a brilliant idea. (and using various names)

Interesting that this release comes after Gaston Browne and his team labour rolled out a massive development plan for the area. Nothing about this 'new' plan is contained in the UPP manifesto and this clearly shows that BS and his government do not have a comprehensive plan for our country.
Another 5 years of UPP governance will only lead to further destruction of our country and erosion of an already damaged economy.
Fellow citizens let us cast a vote for Antigua and Barbuda. Remove UPP and save our country. Vote Gaston Browne and team labour for a brighter future
