Maginley Denies Taking Billboard

Minister John MaginleyAntigua St. john's - The United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate for St John's Rural North, John Maginley, has denied claims that he was involved in the removal of a poster that belonged to his opponent, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party candidate, Charles "Max" Fernandez.

The sign was reportedly taken from a plot of land leading into Cedar Grove.

"It has been going around in the news that John Maginley take down the poster. What interest would I have in the poster? The poster has been there for three, four weeks," the UPP candidate said.

Maginley said that the poster, which had the images of Fernandez and Opposition Leader Gaston Browne, was more help to his campaign erected, and added that he is upset that it has been removed.

The incumbent said that the owner of the property had indicated he was not interested in politics, and more so, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).

He said the land owner accused the ABLP of taking away a piece of land from him several years ago and giving it to someone else, who has erected a business on it.

The Cedar Grove man had allegedly asked, with the assistance of a lawyer, that Fernandez remove the billboard.

In an email dated April 20, from chairman of the ABLP Paul "Chet" Greene, it was acknowledged that after several exchanges, the Labour Party reportedly accepted the owner's position to remove the billboard by May 23. Allegations are that the land owner had initially put a date of April 23 by which the billboard should come down, but allowed them extra time.

That correspondence, according to reports, was cc'd to Opposition Leader Gaston Browne, General Secretary of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) Mary Claire Hurst, Fernandez, and St Peter candidate Asot Michael.

However, after days passed and there was no attempt to remove the poster, the Cedar Grove man reportedly sent someone to take it down.

"Sometime after that and now, the man sent some people to take down the billboard. But he did not knock down the billboard, he just took off the painting. He tell them he don't want any politics on he land. So when the thing go down they firing all about that John Maginley tek down the billboard," the UPP candidate said.

Maginley noted that after the poster was removed, another was erected shortly after.

Again, the owner told the ABLP to take down the billboard, and allegedly contacted the police, who said they could not get involved.

The Development Control Authority (DCA) reportedly advised that the offending party would first have to be served a removal notice in order for the billboard to come down.

"They so desperate. They have all around Antigua they can go and put up a billboard, but they fighting with the man over his own land. These people do not respect Antiguans and Barbudans," Maginley said.

Maginley said the rumour of his involvement was started by opposition operatives through deceit and desperation.

He said the ABLP is always attacking his character by claiming that he is incompetent.

According to the UPP candidate, the claim that he is not performing because tourism is in trouble has stopped since the Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association (AHTA) said the first quarter of 2014 was the best season experienced since 2008.

He said, "I kinda vex that the man tek down the poster. But I want to tell them right, I have no interest whether the poster up, down, sideways, lie down... it matters not to me. He (Fernandez) can't bang me if they have 50 posters up."

@ petr - too far left of center for me

#12 Skyewill » 2014-06-07 03:53

There is a time for everything. I have not changed a bit and is the same person. It is election time and one MUST CHOOSE or DON'T CHOOSE. I chose to choose. Did CA not also choose? You have never heard me say I support corruption or the corrupt and even though the ENTIRE system is corrupt, it is just as difficult to choose the lesser of the evil so you look at the landscape. They tell me that leadership matters and I agree so I am supporting Gaston Browne because he has never been there and I will give him a chance. HERE IS WHY: In 2004, I would fly down just for UPP meetings and I would listen to the broken promises of making wrong right. How they would address corruption, their plans for healthcare and infrastructure. I loved the idea of social change etc. I contributed financially (my small part) to special programs I like school lunch program, Holberton Hospital upgrade (did not happen) and others. I started a million dollar project. and saw how thing really run. The WPP, and the other wasteful spending and lack of transparency and blaming everything on the global crisis over and over. My hope that in 2019 we will begin to see significant changes in candidates. I would rather take a chance on changing again and keep changing until we get it right. Who ever you choose is fine with me. I will not be disappointed in your choice because it's your right. As for me I am not perfect.

ISSUE OF ALLEGATION

#3 RAWLSTON POMPEY » 2014-06-06 06:30

The only issue here might be one of " ...allegation of involvement." A man has to clear his name.

But if " ...Skye has AUGHT" against " ...Rawlston Pompey over a piece of land" [Paragraph 6], that he can't even take to his grave, the only thing " ...SMDH" " ...MAY" do is to encourage the " ...angry SKYE," to remove anything that " ...Rawlston Pompey planted upon his land.

This is " ...natural human behavior." He commits no crime.

While the " ...angry SKYE" " ...May or May not" go to hell," for now, he would have enjoyed a " ...RIGHT" to remove anything from his land' and transport it to the " ...Cooks Dump."

Ask " ...King Short Shirt and Edan Richardson" what happened to their Water Sports beach houses at " ...Halcyon Cove and **enson Bay," and where they took the dismantled buildings.

If " ...Skye" love his brother, he would not treat him in that manner. But his brother " ...must also treat " ...Skye" better, that he may not be so bitter.

By the way, " ...Which world are you living in?"

For a man that was not involved in the poster removal it appears that you know a whole lot about it. I just wished the same way you are so knowledgeable about the poster you would be knowledge about tourism.

So why you disappear when Max showed up in Miami for the independent celebration, ABLP INSIDER? Where you not the key note speaker? We missed you at the picnic, we had reserve the cutting of the pig for you and you did not show up. Max is going to chase you away again.
