Tribute to Nelson Mandela by Sir Shridath Ramphal

Nelson MandelaTomorrow’s children will not be able to say, as we can with pride and a deep sense of privilege, that we lived in the time of Nelson Mandela, a unique and memorable human being.

‘Madiba’ has gone from us; but he is part of eternity and will always belong to the entire world. His indomitable spirit will forever inspire people in pursuit of freedom and justice; his humanity will be a beacon for all who are wronged. He made our troubled age less shameful by his own nobility.

He enriched my own life by the small part I played, as Commonwealth Secretary-General, in restoring him to freedom - even though he showed that truly “Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage”.

That my official Commonwealth residence was the one he came to when first he came to London, after his release from prison, to meet those who fought with him against apartheid and the injustices of the apartheid regime, will forever be a badge of honour for the Commonwealth.

Why Mandela is not Headline News?

What's up Caribarena? We spend a lot of time on the dislikes of Asot, Vere and Robin why not headline news for the greatest leader of our time?

You said "something our 'leaders' will never achieve" Yes cannot say that. For example, I think that is what VB III is trying to do. Lawyer, Irritate the current government, get put on Redonda Island (Robben Island for A&B) for 27 years, and then come back to Antigua and Barbuda to rule with compassion. Am I wrong or VB III is no Mandela?

Mandela was a true leader of people, something our 'leaders' will never achieve. He believed in freedom, forgiveness and saw the good in all people, he was able to unite a heavily divided country in the face of many obstacles, not least from within his own ANC. Our Caribbean 'Leaders' would do well to consider their own missions in life and take example from Madiba, instead of fostering divisiveness, hatred and bigotry. Most of them do not deserve to have their name mentioned in the same sentence as Mandela. Sleep well Madiba, you are truly one of the few that has earned and deserves your rest.

We are creating a self-inflicted apartheid system the way we govern the country. Most of our people can't get the services we are entitled too. Work, Food, Pention, Health Care, selfless governance.

His life could be a lesson for us in Antigua and Barbuda. Its time for us to put away party differences and come together as one people to make Antigua and Barbuda great. We need the likes of Mandela at the helm of our government.

From Prisoner to President, Nelson Mandela has left great foot prints in the sands of time, that many of us should follow. He was simply a man who knew what was right and wrong, and practised the goodness that he believed in! Thank you Mandela for your life, and good bye for now!
