A Thinking Young Person's Perspective

A Thinking Young Person's PerspectiveI'm not ALP or UPP. I have family on both sides. Some are VERY Red and others are VERY Blue. When they argue, I usually just shake my head and walk away.

As a young person rising in Generation Next, I don't see myself as "red" or "blue". I see myself as an independent thinker who cares first and foremost about MY COUNTRY and MY future.

So, when I watched the debate, I went in with an open mind. I still have an open mind and I still don't know who I am voting for.

Now, let me say a few things about both sides.

But before I do so, I must say that I was rather upset that the True Labour Party was not included in the debate. I've been impressed with Vere Bird III and I think it's important as a young party and as a young person that we would be able to hear from them. I hope that in any future debate they will be included.

Now, to deal with the debate. First, the ALP. I really loved what they laid out for the country! What they said - especially Lennox Weston - really spoke to me. They talked about all these great ideas they had for the country. But, as a thinking person, I had to look at it with a grain of skepticism. How are they going to pay for all their promises? Can they really achieve so much? How are they going to deal with all the infighting and scandals of their past? They didn't answer those questions.

Now, the UPP. I must say that I wish the party had done more in government. They promised so much in 2004 and, even though I was only in primary school, I felt the energy of the so-called "change". But, I've wanted more. There aren't enough jobs. There aren't enough opportunity. I wish there was more. But what I liked about them is that they gave real solutions that I believe can actually be implemented.

I still don't like either party, and I'm open to seeing more, but if I had to hold my nose and vote based on that debate, I would support the party that offered REALISTIC solutions. The other option just seems too risky at this time.

If you are a "concerned youth" shouldn't your first concern be about accounting for the peoples money. How can you say anything about UPP when we don't know how much they spent on what and to whom the money went. Is this a joke going on around here? Nobody wants to know or see any accounts? Why are we paying an accountant general and actually staffing her with workers and office equipment? Choooops !!!! How can anyone know how a business is functioning without records ... much less a whole government !!! If UPP shows the books they will be ran out of office RIGHT AWAY!!!

new startegy of the UPP

#7 Observer... » 2014-01-24 10:38

I guess what we are seeing lately is the desperate new UPP strategy. Deceit, deceit and more deceit. They come pretend to be all these new persons. Has anyone notice the number of NEW bloggers we suddely have. All sort of names that never use to be on this website. And their story is all the same. I don't know about labour party, but I am willing to go with UPP. Give me an asperin. Wolf in sheep clothings. And we make them out all the time. Well I guess it's election time, they have to pull out all the stops. Well guys as Al Sharpton would say "We Got You"

A 590 million fiscal deficit in 2009, the highest ever in this countries history, yet this fella claims UPP has a plan. The budget for 2003 was about 600 million. We then hear today that the fiscal deficit for 2013 was 90 something million and revenue collected that year was less than the prior year. Anyway the writer claims UPP convinced him they have a plan. It must be to exit the ship quietly, while the unsuspecting passengers, like the writer, are still busy dancing

oxygen deprivation

#5 tenman » 2014-01-23 20:21

Concerned Antiguan Youth, its strange that you would claim be to independent minded, yet echo UPP keywords. Basically the new UPP saying is its safer with UPP. Some may remember the old ALP slogan, safer with labour. Perhaps what would have helped is if you would have stated the arguments by the UPP which seemed more realistic? Was it the unfeasible chicken farm that did it for you? What about the basically inoperable WPP? Is the fact that public sector workers continue to be paid late a sign of safety and good stewardship? Is it that you are satisfied that laws like Integrity in public life act, exist basically only on paper? Anyway you did say you would hold your nose, we all know what happens to brain when its deprived of oxygen for too long

This is a UPP stalwart posing as a young person. Every youth of this nation should take offense to this article. They are trying to manipulate you by posing like you. It is called wolves in sheep clothing, and we all know what happens with the wolves get within the flock.

Opss it is the same thing that have been happening over the last 10 years. Whoever wrote this article should be jailed for the identity theft of the youths.

Election will come and the UPP will go!

Did he/she actually say dat?

#2 Mr. Byam » 2014-01-23 08:10

“I've been impressed with Vere Bird III”???? Is joke he/she joking? Anybody “impressed” with VC3 needs to get out more. Suppose he/she ever met or read Sir George or Tim Hector, their brains would explode. Well, at least he/she is “thinking”.

A well reasoned discourse by a young person that deserves commendation.

Let us not be fooled by pie in the sky promises by some of our politicians who are desperate for power.

We are going through a rough patch now, but the words of this song are appropriate,' weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning'. After years of mismanagement, structural adjustments were/are needed in order to steady the nation. My people let us hold on.
